FAITHFUL

A Debut Novel by Janet Fox

She went in search of answers, and discovered a love she never expected.

From an emerging voice in the young adult world comes a beautiful debut novel, FAITHFUL by Janet Fox (Speak; Trade Paperback Original; 978-0-142-41413-2; Ages 12 and up; $8.99). Set in 1904, against the gorgeous backdrop of Yellowstone National Park in Montana, FAITHFUL is a heart-breaking and sweeping romance that will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.

With a lyrical hand, Fox deftly weaves her intimate knowledge of Yellowstone National Park, Newport, Rhode Island, and geology (for which she has a masters degree) to paint an epic setting that is cinematic in scope and breathtakingly real. A coming-of-age story about a spoiled young girl who transforms into a strong and independent young woman, teen readers will be swept up in Maggie’s tale and sympathize with the hard choices she must make. Fox writes, in her author’s note, “I am drawn to the fragile balance of life and death in Yellowstone. I hope Maggie’s story in Faithful reminds readers of that fragile balance and of the importance that love occupies in our lives.”

When 16-year-old Maggie Bennet’s mother disappears and is presumed dead, Maggie’s life is turned upside-down. Torn from her elegant Newport home and a wealthy lifestyle, Maggie’s father drags her off on a trip to Yellowstone in Montana under the pretense of uncovering clues about her mother’s location. Only her father has tricked her—the move is permanent and the family’s fortune is gone. Maggie is furious—she knows her mother is alive and wants only to find her and return to the life she knew in Newport. Her only option to rejoin proper society is to marry a much older man—the wealthy, but distasteful, George Graybull.

But while in Yellowstone, Maggie meets, and is immediately drawn to, Tom Rowland—the stubborn and ruggedly handsome son of a park geologist. As he and the beautiful landscape of Yellowstone slowly capture Maggie’s heart, she is forced to decide who she is, and who she wants to be.

A brilliant composite of romance, adventure, and history, FAITHFUL will inspire readers’ imaginations and will leave them eagerly anticipating the next novel by this talented author.
